Legislation
If this is of interest to your company, we will be pleased to pay you a visit and tell you about the advantages of installing a gas alarm system, the applications and the legal requirements.
Under the heading “Køleanlæg og varmepumper, AT vejledning B.4.4, januar 2005” the Danish Working Environment Authority issued a set of official guidelines with information about the special requirements that apply to the installation, layout, maintenance and use of refrigerating systems and heat pumps. The following is an excerpt from those guidelines – focusing on the use of gas detection in the mentioned context.
In connection with the use of CO2 as a refrigerant or a refrigerant in group 1, the room should have a gas alarm system that is specifically designed to monitor the refrigerant in question. If the refrigerant is in group 2, the detection system may consist of an oxygen monitor.
The emergency ventilation and alarm system must be activated automatically in connection with low alarm.
The refrigerating system must shut down automatically in connection with high alarm.
The emergency ventilation and alarm system must be operational independently of the refrigerating system and its supply voltage, also in case of an emergency shutdown.
Example of suggested gas alarm limits for ammonia NH3:
Low alarm: 500 ppm
High alarm: 30.000 ppm
See other relevant guidelines from the Danish Working Environment Authority here.
RMG-Inspektion A/S is accredited by DANAK (the Danish Accreditation and Metrology Fund) as an independent inspection company authorised to inspect and approve automatic gas alarm installations.
It is normally a requirement that automatic gas alarm installations must be inspected and approved by an independent inspection company like RMG-Inspektion A/S. The inspection of automatic gas alarm installations is carried out for the owner of the installation as annual inspections – or for the installation company as an initial inspection of a newly established or expanded installation. Geopal System A/S is prepared to offer assistance in connection with these inspections to ensure that the owner of the installation gets the necessary guidance and advice.
DBI – Dansk Brand- og sikringsteknisk Institut (the Danish Institute of Fire Safety Technology), is another independent inspection agency.
DBI also promotes publications like Forskrift 233, Automatiske gasalarmeringsanlæg (Directive 233, Automatic gas alarm installations). This directive applies to stationary, automatic gas alarm installations in buildings and outdoor installations on land.
