  • NAVIGATOR

The NAVIGATOR is one of the world’s largest factory trawlers, featuring a 1.5 MW cooling capacity for freezing and storing catches. Due to its extreme cooling power, the vessel carries 9 tons of ammonia, making it crucial to have accurate alarms and prompt action in the event of a leak. Geopal detectors are employed to monitor various cooling compressors and associated systems on the NAVIGATOR. This ensures optimal safety and security for the vessel’s crew, effectively safeguarding them against potential hazards associated with ammonia leaks.

Gas detection for the maritime sector

Gas explosions at sea represent a nightmarish scenario for any shipping company, especially for those onboard. Where we can mitigate risks, we must take action. Therefore, Geopal has developed and launched a product line specifically designed for the maritime sector.

The solutions are designed to operate in enclosed environments such as engine rooms, transport containers, and gas tanks—areas where, due to limited ventilation, toxic or explosive gases can easily develop.

Reducing risks with AGA systems

Effective oxygen detection is crucial in enclosed spaces where oxygen is used in organic decomposition (e.g., grain transport), metal oxidation (rust), or simply displaced by other gases (e.g., inert gas, carbon dioxide, nitrogen).

There are always risks when various gases mix, so having a properly installed AGA system onboard is essential for the safety of employees. Toxic gases are produced during processes such as decomposition and mold growth (detecting CO2 in ballast tanks). Explosive hydrocarbons can occur in engine rooms during combustion processes, and hydrogen during battery charging.

With the transition to greener fuels such as methanol and ammonia, there is also a need for gas detection. According to Clean Notification requirements, there is also a need to detect potent greenhouse gases like freon (HFC & HFO), which can be present in compressor rooms and refrigeration/freezer compartments. This is particularly important on LNG and LPG tankers with large refrigeration systems, as the gas is significantly cooled by compression to transport as much as possible.
