Gas detection in UPS, battery, and truck charging room
Hydrogen generation during battery charging can quickly become dangerous if the hydrogen concentration becomes too high in the charging area. In the worst case, it can result in an acute explosion hazard if there is such a high hydrogen development from the batteries during charging that it creates what is known as oxyhydrogen gas.
Oxyhydrogen gas forms when hydrogen and oxygen mix. This gas is energy-rich and highly explosive over a large concentration range (4-77 vol%) compared to other gases like methane (4.4-16.5 vol%). Since hydrogen is lighter than air, it is essential to ensure that the battery is not mounted in a place where gas pockets can form, where the gas can accumulate and reach an explosive concentration. Just a small spark can ignite the gas mixture, resulting in a powerful explosion.
Gas generation occurs primarily during charging but also during discharging and resting. The risk can be minimized by proper ventilation and gas detection in the UPS, battery, and truck charging rooms to prevent explosive mixtures. Gas detectors must be approved for use in explosive areas. Geopal can provide these along with industry-leading expertise in the field.
AGA gas detection in charging areas
We can also help your company set up and install an effective AGA gas detection system in charging areas associated with warehouses, freight terminals, production companies, or other businesses where electric forklifts are part of the daily operations.
In addition to increased safety, there is also an energy benefit to installing an AGA system. Many companies choose to ventilate their way out of the problem, often resulting in high energy costs. By installing an AGA system in the charging area, ventilation is controlled as needed, which can immediately impact the next heating bill.
