Are You Exposed to Hazardous and Flammable Gases Every Day?

Hazardous gases are a part of many of our everyday lives. Our service technician, Sebastian, has recently completed a service task for a Swedish university, as teaching facilities often use the highly flammable gas hydrogen for experiments in laboratories, and therefore, gas detection is crucial in such environments. In this task, Sebastian used the gas detector GP-NOVA for detecting hydrogen.

Beyond hydrogen, flammable gases include methane, acetylene, propane, etc. These hazardous and flammable gases can be found in various places, including but not limited to biogas plants, sewers, power plants, marine environments, Power-to-X facilities, wastewater treatment plants, UPS and battery rooms, and educational facilities such as the university, Sebastian visited.

So yes, the likelihood of you working at a place with flammable gas is high!

The risks of not having gas detection installed can be such:

Explosion and Fire Hazard
Flammable gases can form explosive mixtures with air. In the presence of an ignition source, such as a spark or open flame, these mixtures can lead to explosions and fires. This can result in significant damage to property, equipment, and, most importantly, pose a threat to human life.

Health Risks and Death
Some flammable gases can also be toxic and prolonged exposure to these gases can lead to adverse health effects. Perhaps the most severe consequence is the potential for loss of life or injuries among employees and other individuals present in the affected area.

Environmental Impact
Releases of flammable gases into the environment can have detrimental effects. In addition to contributing to air pollution, these releases can harm ecosystems, vegetation, and wildlife. Certain gases may also contribute to climate change or have other environmental consequences.

Regulatory Violations
Many industries must adhere to strict regulations for handling hazardous substances. Non-compliance leads to legal consequences, fines, and shutdown of operations. Regular monitoring and detection are essential for maintaining compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Workplace Disruptions
Incidents involving flammable gases can lead to evacuations, shutdowns, and disruptions in operations. This can result in financial losses, decreased productivity, and damage to the company’s reputation.
