Benzene, also known as benzol (C6H6), is a colorless and highly flammable aromatic hydrocarbon known to be carcinogenic. Typically, benzene is used as a starting point for the synthesis of other substances, particularly in laboratories. It is employed in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, plastics, gasoline, synthetic rubber, napalm, dyes, phenol for synthetic resins, and cyclohexane for nylon.

Benzene also poses an air pollution problem in urban areas, especially around gas stations. It can also be found as a contaminant in drinking water and food and is a health risk through inhalation and tobacco smoking, where it is carcinogenic and can cause damage to the nervous system and bone marrow.

Symptoms of exposure often include discomfort, headache, and dizziness. To prevent workplace accidents and personal injury, it is crucial to prioritize safety and adhere to guidelines for the proper handling of benzene.
